Position Overview 

Position for a qualified Organic/Polymer synthesis chemist to contribute to R&D initiatives. The candidate is an enthusiastic motivated scientist and effective individual contributor to support and lead R&D projects. Working hands-on alongside other scientists, you will develop novel crosslinker chemistry for global XLR business growth initiatives. The ideal candidate is a hands-on scientist, a good communicator with significant practical experience synthesizing and understanding mechanisms of a variety of chemical reactions.

Responsible for conducting experiments to prepare, characterize new crosslinker resin products and processes, assist applications group in understanding structure-performance relationship, assist engineering team with process scale-ups with attention to safe operations.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for contributing to and leading new projects aimed at short term product and process development and long term innovations for crosslinker resins portfolio.
  • Utilize the strong synthetic background and understanding of structure-performance relationships to identify and propose new research spaces to develop and characterize new crosslinker chemistries aligned with XLR growth initiatives and market opportunities.
  • Understand and adhere to SHE policy, maintain a safe workplace and demonstrate leadership in driving safety behaviors.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with technical, manufacturing and business teams to develop and launch new technologies.
  • Interact with internal and external analytical teams to characterize the structure of new product developments.
  • Monitor and understand the patent and non-patent literature to keep abreast of emerging and competitive technology in support of new product development and identifying IP space to patent developed technology.
  • Clear communication via technical reports and oral presentations.
  • Coach and mentor junior chemists. 

 

Required skills and experience 

  • Significant hands-on experience with chemical synthesis with expertise in understanding compositional characterization a must.
  • Demonstrated five to ten years’ work experience with polymer and or organic synthesis with an understanding of new product development and characterization in chemical industry R&D laboratories.
  • Experience with condensation and poly-condensation chemistry preferred.
  • Experience with solvent and water based polymerization techniques a plus.
  • An understanding of industrial coating chemistries related to crosslinking chemistries to enhance performance a plus.
  • Attention to safety and safe work practices.
  • Broad knowledge in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials, and Engineering
  • Working knowledge of process development and scale up requirements
  • Good time management and prioritization of project work with ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Attention to documentation of work.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal and team work skills
  • Exhibits awareness of commercial and environmental impact of project work.
  • Knowledge, awareness of ISO compliance.
  • Attention to safety and safe work practices.

Work Environment: Lab environment with limited exposure to noise, dust, fumes, moderate heat, safety hazards, etc. Requires inside and outside work, and some exposure to weather conditions. Must be able to wear a respirator when required.
